The 100th episode of Selling Houses Australia Series 10 is in one of the hottest property markets in the country, Sydney’s inner west. To celebrate this amazing anniversary, a huge challenge was taken on all in the name of charity. For almost a hundred years, this heritage house in the suburb of Petersham has been owned by the Salvation Army. Dozens of families have been housed within the classic brick walls of the property. But the problem was, it was very run down and almost unliveable. The job was to renovate and sell the property, with every dollar made on the sale going back to the Salvos.

The house was dilapidated but had some strong features, including a formal lounge and dining room, ornate cornices and ceiling roses. The downside to the large five-bedroom layout was that there was only one decent-sized family bathroom.

The free-standing house had its own back garden which was cluttered and overgrown, and the front was in dire need of an upgrade – but they had to keep with its heritage style. This was one of the biggest, toughest, and most rewarding renovations taken on by the SHA team.

Interior

Shaynna recreated the grandeur of the original house with some modern enhancements. Each room – and all the decorative trim detail – was carefully painted to help restore the rooms to their former glory. New lighting and stylish window coverings were installed throughout the house. Luxaflex PolySatin® Shutters now provide shade in the lounge, dining area, bedrooms and bathrooms, and Luminette® Privaxy Sheers and Roller Blinds were fitted in the family room and kitchen. In the formal lounge and dining rooms, both fireplaces were reinstated by installing gas fireplaces and beautiful mantles, and a mix of old and new furniture was combined to create a sense of historical sophistication.

One of the smaller bedrooms was transformed into a bathroom to create a more practical floorplan of four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The house now has a bespoke kitchen that is twice the original size, complete with custom Luxaflex Roller Blinds, stunning bench tops, splashback and modern appliances. The kitchen elegance is mirrored in the informal lounge area which includes new bi-fold doors and automated soft shades (operated with the PowerViewTM Motorsation system, through the phone/tablet PowerView app or handheld remote).

Exterior

Out the front of the house, the old unsightly carport was pulled down to reveal the façade of our heritage beauty. Cobblestones grace the path to the front door, and tessellated tiles were laid in a federation style on the porch to revive the heritage feel that had been lost over time. The colours of the tiles also provided Charlie with a colour scheme for the exterior paints.

Charlie removed everything from the existing back garden to start with a clean slate. His first addition was a paved entertaining area which gave him the base for a large outdoor kitchen and dining setting – topped off with a remote-controlled retractable Luxaflex Garda awning. To get the most out of the small-sized yard, Charlie also laid new turf for a kids’ play area, built raised garden beds, and lined the fence with mature plants.
